JAMB Adopt Pin Vending For 2017 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will adopt “pin vending” for the
2017 UTME test, advising intending candidates to get familiar with the new approach.
Dr Fabian Benjamin, the board’s Head of Media and Information, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that it
would no longer use scratch cards.
“Candidates, wishing to sit for the 2017 examination, should start getting themselves familiar with the newly adopted process of pin
vending by the board.
“We must make ourselves open to change like it is obtained in other climes.
“We are no longer going back to the use of scratch card; that method is outdated.
“Candidates wishing to register for the examination will just make online payment and get a pin with which they can upload their
data.
“This new pin vending will be accessible through the options of web payment, ATM issued cards like Visa, Verve, and Master card,
online Quick Teller, mobile application and Bank Branch case/card.’’
Benjamin assured that the board was working hard to redress all challenges experienced by
candidates during its 2016 UTME as it was preparing for the 2017 diet.
He said that all hands were on deck to ensure a hitch free conduct of the examination across the country.
“Preparations are on to ensure that all the technical hitches that manifested in the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination
(UTME) do not arise again.
“That is not to say that the examination will be completely hitch-free.
“But we are deploying resources to correct the ones identified already.
“In the course of the examination, should there be any other new challenges, we will act promptly.’’
The spokesman also said that the board would begin validation of UTME centres across the country soon.
“We shall be going round to the proposed centres to check the state of their facilities and also to ensure that such facilities could
accommodate a minimum of 250 candidates,’’ he said.
NAN reports that some candidates, who sat for the 2016 examination, complained of various technical hitches.
Such challenges ranged from incomplete upload of questions from servers to poor backup facilities in some centres among others.
NAN also recalls that the board’s Registrar,Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, recently announced the scrapping of the use of scratch card, describing it as outdated.
He said the board decided to do away with the method because of its consistent subjection to fraudulent practices.

LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Staff Protest Over Non Payment Of Salary

Following the non-payment of salaries of members of staff of Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho for
eight months, the National Association Of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM),LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho
chapter has embarked on a three day warning protest and industrial action which started on Wednesday 26th Oct , 2016 to register their
displeasure over the non-payment of salary of the staff nurses of the Teaching Hospital.
The protest will lead to an indefinite strike on the third day, Friday 28th if no positive action is taken by the management of the hospital
and the Oyo state government as to proffer solution to the nagging issue.
Speaking with the NANNM Lautech Teaching Hospital Vice Chairman, Com.
Oyewunmi Zaccheus Opeyemi, he said the Oyo state government has been owing them eight months’ salary.
Oyewumi lamented that half salary of January salary was paid shortly after NLC Oyo State called her strike in late August.
He further stated that after the payment of half of January’s salary in late August, the (NANNM)
executives proceeded to meet with the government to negotiate how to manage the saga, meeting with the commissioner for Finance and Commissioner for health in which
they were assured to be calm as the two commissioners will discuss the issue with the Governor.
However, he said to their surprise they received the half salary of February again in September which prompted them again to meet with the management.
Oyewumi while speaking said, “The
management however promised to proffer a solution so we trusted them again after they paid half of March salary in late September and
we as a body told the management that if we should receive half of April salary they will see our other side; but the stroke that broke the
camel’s back was again when we received another half salary alert of April.
“This was what led to the an emergency congress by (NANNM) where decision of the three days protest and by 12pm on the third
day we would embark on an indefinite strike.”

Senate Suspended JAMB 3 Years Results Validity

Report has emerged that the Senate has suspended the move to amend the Act establishing the Joint
Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
With this development, the extension of JAMB result validity has also been put on hold.
This was disclosed by the spokesperson of the board, Dr. Fabian Benjamin.
According to him, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education,Aliyu Wamakko, represented by Senator Ajayi Boroffice, announced this during an oversight visit to its Headquarters.
It was learnt that the Senate has suspended the idea to allow for adequate consultation with
experts and to ensure that the progress being made by JAMB in the conduct of examination is not impeded.
“Your JAMB result is only valid for one year and we thought it would be better for it to be valid for at least three years.
That would reduce the burden on the parents, students and even the
institution that is conducting the test.
I think it is.good for all of us and would not be rejected by the public.
“We don’t make laws for an individual or for the Senate. But we make laws for the country in the
interest of all of us.
A bill must not necessarily be
at the convenience of a particular organization.
Since we don’t want to make a law that would.impede the progress of any institution, we are bound to listen to what the stakeholders are
saying.” Wamakko stated
Reacting to this, the Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, commended the
Senate for listening to his appeal and called on the House of Representatives and the Executive to equally do the same by suspending the amendment of the JAMB Act.

AAUA Management Suspended ASUU Chairman

Three weeks after the AdekunleAjasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State
chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspended its four months strike, leaders of the staff union have been suspended by the university management.
The ASUU chairman, Dr Sola Fayose, his predecessor,Dr Busuyi Mekusi, Vice Chairman, Dr Dorcas Alese and Assistant Secretary, Dr. Sola
Olorunfemi were, yesterday, suspended for what a management’s source described as
“unruly behaviour”.
Others suspended include Investment Secretary, DrAdedayoAfe, the Welfare Secretary,Dr Bolu Oshodi and a non-executive member whose name could not be ascertained at press
time.
Some ASUU members claimed the
management may have come after their leaders after the union called for the “democratisation of academic positions” in line with the
regulations setting up the university.
The union had on October 11, 2016 suspended its action over non-payment of their salary arrears and deductions.
As part of the condition to call off the strike, the lecturers gave the Vice Chancellor (VC) a seven-day ultimatum to start the process of electing substantive deans of faculties in accordance with the extant laws setting up the university.
The management confirmed the suspension of the ASUU leaders in a statement by the Head of Information, Protocol and Public Relations Unit, Mr Sola Imoru.
The statement said the school Senate, during its emergency meeting after the suspension of
the strike, directed all its academics to submit students’ scores and upload same on the university portal within one week.
Imoru said: “In utmost disregard for the decision of the Senate, the highest academic organ of the university, some misguided
academics disrupted the meetings called in some faculties and departments to carry out
the Senate’s decision, assaulted their colleagues, including senior professors, and generally disturbed the peace of the university.”
Imoru said the management had constituted a panel to investigate the matter in order to restore disciplineand peace in the institution.
Efforts to get the reaction of the suspended lecturers were unsuccessful.
Calls and messages put across to Dr Fayose were not picked nor replied at press time.
