Buhari Installs Gbong Gwom Jos As 3rd UNIZIK Chancellor



Da Jacob Gyang Buba, CON, was Wednesday officially installed as the new chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. This was done as part of activities marking the combined 10th convocation of the university. The new chancellor an indigene of Madu village of Du District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau state was born on 10th October 1951. He is the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of Plateau state Council of Chiefs. He is also an ordained elder of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He has also been honored with two prestigious National Honours as Officer of the Federal Republic, OFR and Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON.

Da Jacob is married to Mrs. Rakiya Jacob Gyang Buba and they are blessed with eleven children and four grand children.
In his address during the occasion, the university visitor President Buhari disclosed that he is aware of structural and Financial needs of universities and that government through its agencies had been funding research. The President who was represented by the executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Prof. Julius Okojie, promised that his administration will not look down on the education sector.
Also in his address, the university vice chancellor Prof Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku FAS expressed the excitement of the university at having such a notable personality as its Chancellor. Prof Ahaneku expressed the belief that with the Chancellor’s experience in the Nigerian Customs Service, he is definitely coming to the position of Chancellor of the university with wealth of experience. The vice chancellor also thanked those that honored the event invitation for finding time to grace the occasion.
In his address, the university pro-chancellor and Chairman of Council AVM Larry Koinyan (Rtd), welcomed all guests to the historic event and disclosed that the university community is very lucky to have His Majesty as its Chancellor. He further congratulated the new chancellor and informed him that his appointment as the new chancellor of the university is a further testament of the high esteem with which he is held by the Federal Government.
Also in his address, the new chancellor expressed delight for his investiture as the third chancellor of the university and expressed appreciation to president Muhammadu Buhari for finding him worthy of the appointment. While expressing his appreciation, Da Jacob Gyang Buba said that although the position of Chancellor is honorific, it still comes with obligations and challenges and according to him, it is for that reason that the university intend to find sufficient leverage and the goodwill of various stakeholders in diverse fields of endeavour to partner with the management and staff of the great institution in order to advance the noble goals and objectives of Late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, after whom the university is named.

The new chancellor also congratulated the graduating students and wished them well in their future endeavours.
Highlights of the event include a carnival in which various offices and departments of the university participated in, entertainment by the traditional dance group from Plateau state and brief entertainment by the Edo state students of the university. The university’s Faculty of Arts emerged the best in the carnival.
Other dignitaries at the event include the university visitor ably represented by the executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Prof. Julius Okojie, Anambra state governor represented by his Deputy Dr Nkem Okeke, the Obi of Onitsha Nnaemeka Achebe (CFR), Professors and gentlemen of the press.
