Futa Lead others in Mathematics Competition
Four students of the Federal University of Technology,
Akure, Ondo State, have clinched the top medals in the 2016
National Mathematics Competition for University Students.
The quartet, of the Department of Mathematics, won the
gold, silver and bronze medals at the contest organised by
the National Mathematics Centre, Abuja.
While Michael Omolaja, a 500-level student won the gold
medal and was declared the Best Student Mathematician in
Nigerian Universities, Mary Akinade and Segun Ofe also 500-
level students, won silver medals. Desmond Dike, a 300 level
student, won a bronze medal.
According to the Chief Executive, NMC, Prof. Adewale
Solarin, the Mathematics champions, who emerged tops
from a pool of 24 universities and 96 students, will
represent Nigeria at the International Mathematics
Competition in July in Bulgaria.
He added that students from 80 countries would participate
in the international competition to be organised by the
University College, London.
Omolaja, who plans to major in Fluid Numerical and
Complex Analysis, explained that Mathematics was not as
difficult subject.
“It is a privilege to represent Nigeria and we are going to put
in our best to make the most of the privilege,” he said.
The FUTA Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, while
congratulating the team, assured them of the university’s
continued support as they represent Nigeria in Bulgaria.
He described their feat as a big boost to the university’s
image and another testimony to its excellence in academic
matters.
